E.1027 is considered the masterwork of Irish architect Eileen Gray, yet the house at the edge of the Mediterranean lies in a state of dereliction and neglect. Why is so little attention paid to the plight of such an astounding piece of residential architecture, created by one of the discipline's most underrepresented masters? Deirdre Colgan and Jim Colgan document and investigate the politics behind the preservation of this Modernist icon and the state of the work started by the French Government in 2001. Journeying to the site of the house, they trace local, regional, national and international records pertaining to its ownership and history. E. 1027 has endured a series of violent acts, forming a history of repeated desecration, and immediate repairs are called for. The research gathered forms the basis for a series of multi-media projects.
